In Illinois, assisted living and shared housing establishments care for vulnerable adults and seniors who depend on staff in an emergency. To keep residents safe, at least one CPR-certified direct-care staff member must be awake and on duty at all times.

Under 77 Ill. Adm. Code 690, an assisted living establishment must have at all times at least one direct-care staff person who is CPR-certified, awake, and on duty. That person must be able to intervene with residents until emergency services arrive.

A recognized, up-to-date CPR certificate is the way to meet this obligation; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
