Online CPR Training: An Effective Solution

Online CPR Training: An Effective Solution

Why is CPR training important? __________

According to the study: Einspruch, E., L. et al. 2007. "Retention of CPR skills learned in a traditional AHA Heartsaver course versus 30-min video self-training: A controlled randomized study". Resuscitation. Vol. 74, no. 3, 476-486. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.resuscitation.2007.01.030

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a vital skill that can save lives in an emergency. However, traditional CPR courses can be long, costly, and sometimes inaccessible. This is where online training comes in. According to this study published in 2007 in the medical journal Resuscitation, online CPR training is an effective alternative to traditional learning. Our article will therefore explore the advantages of online learning presented in this study to establish how First Aid & CPR Quebec can help you acquire CPR skills in an accessible and practical way.

Before discussing the benefits of online CPR training, it is essential to understand why this skill is so crucial. The majority of cardiac arrests occur in a home or in a public place. In short, far from hospital walls. It is an incident that anyone could witness at any time involving a loved one, a colleague, or even a stranger. According to a study by the American Heart Association (AHA), CPR performed immediately by a bystander can double or even triple the chances of survival (AHA, 2005). However, for various reasons, such as a lack of time and money or difficulty learning in a traditional course setting, many people are not trained in CPR.

Summary __________

Titled "Retention of CPR skills learned in a traditional AHA Heartsaver course versus 30-min video self-training: a controlled randomized study", the study demonstrates that learning CPR online can represent a valid alternative to traditional courses. According to the authors, the length of traditional training represents an obstacle to wider dissemination of CPR learning. They therefore propose online training through short videos as a response to this obstacle. To prove this hypothesis, 285 adults aged 40 to 70 who had received no CPR training in the past five years were randomly assigned to 3 distinct groups: (1) a control group with no training, (2) a group following traditional Heartsaver training, and (3) a group viewing a 30-minute self-training video. Researchers then assessed and compared the CPR skills of each group immediately after training and two months later. Participants were evaluated on 3 points: speed of intervention, calling 911, and overall performance.

Key Results __________

During the assessment immediately after training, participants in group 3 obtained results very similar to those in group 2. While participants in group 2 obtained a higher score for calling 911, those in group 3 had a higher score for speed of intervention and overall performance. After 2 months, both groups demonstrated similar results.

Although the results show a decline in skills 2 months after training, neither group showed a more significant decrease than the other. With the exception of calling 911 where participants in group 3 obtained a result similar to group 1, groups 2 and 3 showed a similar decline. However, the authors emphasized the need to find strategies to improve retention in a more sustained way.

During the second performance assessment two months after training, participants in group 3 demonstrated CPR skill retention equivalent to that of participants in group 2 regarding speed of intervention and overall performance. Compared to group 1, groups 2 and 3 showed better skills.

The study confirms that online training through short videos can represent an option just as valid as traditional training. The authors thus demonstrated that this faster and more accessible learning method can enable wider dissemination of CPR learning.

Conclusion __________

The scientific study by Einspruch, E., L. et al. attests to the relevance of offering people the option to learn CPR online independently. Being a valid alternative on par with traditional training, it can help increase the number of people trained, and thus offer better chances of survival to cardiac arrest victims.
